Woman hospitalized following 30-foot fall into ocean

EAST HONOLULU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A lucky 25 year old North Shore woman survived a scary fall into the water near Hanauma Bay just off Baboon's Nose.

Emergency responders received a call at 9:20 in the morning for a swimmer in distress. She told officials she fell about 25-30 feet.

Emergency Medical Services Spokesperson Shayne Enright explained, "She fell at least 10 feet into either the ocean or tidepools. Fishermen said they had to pull her out of the water onto the rocks to safety."

Ocean Safety believes she may have been taking scenic photos when she got knocked into the water. "It's beautiful" warns Enright. "But it's deceptive. If you get too close, it's unclear if she was knocked out by a wave or what, but you're out there, very far away."

The incident happened out of sight of lifeguards in an area with restricted public access.

Thankfully some fisherman were close by when it happened. Ocean Safety arrived a few minutes later by jet ski and paddle board.

Fire Rescue airlifted the woman out to be treated for head trauma. According to Enright, "She's very lucky she suffered serious injuries, head injury but thankfully it looks like she's going to be okay."
