Search continues for suspect who jumped in the Appomattox River

State Police tell us around 8:00 a.m. Saturday dive teams resumed a search of the Appomattox River for a suspect who went to great lengths to elude them Friday evening. It all happened when a trooper tried to make a traffic stop when he noticed an equipment violation on a car. But police say the driver just kept going. That led to a chase with a dramatic ending.

It all came to an end on the Boulevard near the Colonial Heights and Petersburg line. After the suspect led officers on a chase, they say the driver got out of his car and jumped over the railing near the Appomattox River. That's when officers and canines scoured the area to find him - but so far - no luck. People in the area recall seeing the chaotic moments play out.

"I saw the helicopters looming down close and I saw fire trucks coming through and they were up here at the bridge…I think it's horrible…It's just a lot going on in this area that hasn't been good," said Teresa Mitchell.

No word why the suspect ran away from officers or where he is now. State police are calling this an ongoing investigation.

Officers searched by air and along the river banks but had to suspend the search once it got dark.
