WAILUA, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

{Update}

The fire that broke out at the historic Coco Palms Resort on Kauai was deemed extinguished at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Heavy equipment was used to tear down the remaining building that was badly burned in the fire and move the rubble around to allow the firefighters to soak the exposed areas with foam.

Officials say the work was completed at 11:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. An estimate of the damages that resulted from the fire has not yet been determined.

According to a preliminary report, the main lobby and adjoining offices of the resort were completely destroyed and the breezeway of a connecting building was badly burned.

{Update}

The fire that broke out at the historic Coco Palms resort at Wailua Beach Friday afternoon is nearly extinguished as of Saturday morning.

Kauai Fire Department is currently on standby at the resort to control any possible flare-ups. Fire inspectors are also on scene continuing their investigation on the cause of the fire.

Officials say  the resort's main lobby and adjoining offices are totally destroyed. There is no estimate to the costs of the damages.

According to KPD, there were no injuries reported.

The Kauai Fire Department is investigating what sparked a large fire at the iconic Coco Palms resort at Wailua Beach.The fire was first reported shortly before noon Friday and contained at 2:15 p.m. Crews at the scene said at least two structures at the resort were affected.

Crews from the Kaiakea, Kapaa and Lihue fire stations battled the flames. They were joined by firefighters from the Kalaheo Fire Station late in the afternoon.

The hotel is the only major hotel on Kauai that never reopened after it was destroyed by Hurricane Iniki in 1992.

"You can smell like plastic, all the old curtains and whatever is left in there from 22 years ago from the hurricane," said witness Leilani Cabais. "I'm surprised it didn't burn down years ago, but it's really kinda sad."

The resort's site manager said the fire caused major damage.

"The whole lobby, just looks like the whole terrace lounge, the lagoon terrace lounge, lagoon dining room, the whole breezeway where that big beautiful shell was hanging, flames just roared through there. So it's a lot of damage," said Coco Palms site manager Bob Jasper.

Efforts to rebuild were never abandoned, despite an estimated price tag of about $125 million. Most recently, officials were considering seeking foreign loans to rebuild the resort, which was a Kauai favorite for stars like Elvis Presley.

Tyler Greene of Coco Palms Hui LLC had just arrived at the Kauai airport when he got word of the blaze. He said the fire won't halt his group's rebuilding plans.

"We're focused on getting it opened and getting it rebuilt, so we'll stay the course and just keep moving forward."
