SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX/CBS) - Anthony Bustos won't give homeless people spare change, but he will help with their message.

He's handed out at least 15 signs, giving people who ask for money a marketing makeover in the hope that a laugh translates to a donation.

The social experiment started a few months ago when he was driving and saw a panhandler with a sign that just said "Poor, hungry."

"I had no inclination to give him any money, and I was wondering if something funny were written on the sign would I give him some money?" Bustos said. "And I decided I probably would have."

And it's working for some, including one man who told Bustos his sign was attracting a lot of tourists. Some asked the man to take pictures with him.

Bustos said his friends want to help by either making signs or inspiring catchy phrases.

He doesn't know if the signs change much, but it's changed him.

"We don't always have to change the world," Bustos said. "We can do something small to make a small difference, and that's OK."
