Man critically injured in Haleiwa car accident

HALEIWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 50-year-old man was critically injured during a car accident in Haleiwa early Friday morning, paramedics said.

Officials with the Honolulu Police Department closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions near the Anahulu Bridge as they conducted an investigation. Traffic was rerouted onto a nearby bypass road.

Paramedics said the man, believed to have been driving a truck, crashed into a pole on the bridge, commonly referred to as the "Rainbow Bridge," at around 2 a.m. The man was not wearing a seatbelt, according to EMS officials.

Witnesses at the scene said the man appeared to have been driving out of Haleiwa town and that it looked like he had hit the bridge.
