Rail traffic moving again after Springfield Township derailment

LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Norfolk Southern says rail traffic on the tracks west of Toledo has resumed after more than a dozen cars came off the tracks Thursday.

The railroad says traffic is moving at very slow speeds as work continues to remove debris from the track area at the intersection of Old Airport Highway and Crissey Road in Springfield Township.  Construction crews are still at the scene making permanent repairs to the tracks.  The Lucas County Sheriff's Department says the Crissey Road crossing remains closed and will until the railroad completes cleanup.

Norfolk Southern says 15 cars derailed around 8:30 a.m. Thursday. Twelve of those cars dumped their contents. The railroad says no hazardous material was spilled in the derailment.

Initially those near the tracks were evacuated because of liquid spilling from one of the cars. Eventually those on scene determined the liquid is vegetable oil and the evacuation order was lifted.

The cause of the derailment is unknown at this time.  State Highway Patrol, Railroad Police and the Sheriff and County Engineer are all investigating.
