Mark Carpenter - Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNL

Mark Carpenter

Growing up in Palolo Valley, I have fond memories of always being surrounded by the sounds of sports. Whether it was the commentary stylings of Jim Nantz calling a Peyton Manning touchdown pass on Sunday mornings. Or Marv Albert accompanying a Michael Jordan game winner during the NBA Playoffs. Or SportsCenter's Neil Everett turning a simple highlight into a witty performance on the weeknights.

My passion for sports developed at a very young age and I realized that I wanted to be a part of those moments. Not to be the one taking the final shot, but the man in your living room painting a picture with his words and setting a scene that brings out a wealth of emotions.
My path to being a sportscaster started with the high school newspaper at Kamehameha Schools and then Hawaii Pacific University's publication after that. Staying home in the islands helped me find an internship at Hawaii News Now right before my senior year and I saw that as the perfect opportunity to pursue my dream job.
Fortunately, my trajectory at HNN has been one that's allowed me to wear many different hats in a short amount of time. The checklist includes stints at intern to associate producer to one man band-reporter before eventually becoming a sports anchor.
I always had a love for athletics at any level and my journey through journalism gave me the tools to tell the best stories possible. The ones that transcend the box score. The ones that get people talking.
