Phone scammers impersonating HPD officers

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Police Department has received reports of individuals claiming to be Honolulu police officers and soliciting money over the phone.

The impersonators calling claim themselves to be Lieutenant or Captain Kemp or Lieutenant Williams of the HPD.  Residents who answer their call are notified that a complaint has been filed against the resident or resident's spouse, and that the charges can be dropped for a payment or fee.

HPD is reminding the public that the police department never solicits money over the phone or in person, they also do not drop any charges.  The public is advised by HPD to never give money to strangers.

The scammers call with phone numbers of 808-529-3111 or with 514 and 202 area codes.

Anyone who receives this type of call, is encouraged to contact the HPD's Criminal Investigation Division at 768-3609.
