Tank at Sand Island wastewater plant catches fire

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A tank at the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant that was undergoing routine maintenance on Tuesday morning caught fire, according to Honolulu Fire Department officials.

Large flames could be seen coming from the facility, and an HFD spokesperson says the fire occurred after a piece of equipment designed to capture methane gas leaked.

No injuries were reported, and no evacuations were ordered. Officials say there did not appear to be substantial damage to the tank, but plant officials were planning to assess the equipment later on Tuesday.
