(POOL/RUSSIA 24/CNN) – The White House says President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on Monday about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Tensions in the region have been high since March when Russia annexed Crimea, formerly part of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian government continues to battle pro-Russian separatists in other parts of the country.

According to the White House, President Obama on Monday urged Putin to pressure separatists to abide by a cease fire reached this week.

President Obama also praised Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's peace plan for the conflict.

The president also expressed the U.S.'s willingness to pursue additional sanctions against Russia is necessary.
