Kauai County employee killed in traffic accident

LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 55-year-old Kauai County employee died Thursday after a traffic crash happened on Kaumualii Highway, according to the Kauai County.

A preliminary investigation showed Severino Butay, a Kalaheo resident, was next to a trailer attached to a County pickup truck along the westbound shoulder of the highway, between mile marker 14 and 15, at approximately 9:30 a.m. He and two other County employees were apparently repairing a tire attached to the parked trailer when a semi-truck, traveling west on the highway, attempted an abrupt stop. The semi-truck then veered off the roadway and struck the parked trailer.

The other two men were taken to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Traffic safety investigators closed the highway in both directions for about four hours while the investigation took place. Traffic was diverted onto Halewili Road until both lanes were reopened at around 2:30 p.m.
