WAIANAE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 12-year-old girl has died from an apparent drowning at Pokai Bay Beach Park, and her younger sister is in hospital in serious but stable condition.
Honolulu Ocean Safety officials received a call around noon Sunday of a near-drowning incident.
Bystanders had found a nine-year-old girl face up in the water. Officials say the victim was reportedly falling in and out of consciousness. She was taken to a nearby hospital in serious but stable condition.
EMS officials say they received a second near-drowning call about 30 minutes later from the same area. Officials pulled the victim, a 12-year-old girl, out of the water and conducted CPR on her. According to EMS, the girl was not breathing and unresponsive. She was transported in critical condition to an area hospital, where she later died.
Witnesses told authorities that the girls' father left them unattended at Pokai Bay Beach Park. It is suspected that the older sister was trying to help her younger sister.
EMS would like to remind people to keep an eye on their children when going to the beach.
