Man arrested in Manoa Marketplace attack

A random attack at Manoa Marketplace landed a 49-year-old man in jail. Bert Watanabe was arrested for harassment and disorderly conduct this morning at about 10:30 a.m.

According to witnesses, Watanabe started yelling and hitting customers near the Mcdonald's. He allegedly tried to assault one of the arresting Honolulu Police officers. No one was hurt.

"He was in the back of the police car when I saw him, seemed very agitated, smiling, laughing, talking to himself," said Steve Lane of the Manoa Neighborhood Watch Program. "I was told he would be taken to hospital first but he was placed under arrest."

Watanabe has a criminal record which includes more arrests for harassment and disorderly conduct. He also had a restraining order filed by a family member years ago.
