HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The daughter of legendary waterman Titus Kinimaka is making waves of her own.

Maluhia Stark-Kinimaka has been awarded the $10,000 Duke Kahanamoku Ambassador of Aloha Scholarship.

Growing up in the ocean, salt water runs in the Kauai native's blood.

But, come fall, she'll be trading in Hawaii's shores for the west coast.

Earning a 4.3 GPA in her senior year at Kapa'a High School, Stark-Kinimaka is headed to Stanford University.

"Most surfers today, especially the younger generation coming up, realize how important it is to have something to fall back on because, like any professional sport, it's hard to make it last for a lifetime," Stark-Kinimaka said.

The future cardinal is looking to study Aerospace Engineering during her time in California.
