(Source: KCCI/CBS) - Over the next few weeks plenty of minivans will head out for a summer road trip, but one couple bypassed all of those to visit every water tower in the state of Iowa.

Twelve years ago, Fred and Sylvia Hawker took the long way home from an appointment an hour away. Those back roads dropped them in towns they'd never visited. Almost every one, no matter how tiny, shared the same skyline.

That prompted them to grab their map and camera and begin a quest that took 10 years and filled 20 photo albums.

The retirees visited and snapped pictures of every water tower between Iowa's borders.

They got both Granger's hot and cold water towers, the one in New Vienna with a stone base and dozens that proudly display hometown colors and mascots.

But they discovered the tallest thing in town is often hard to find on tree-lined streets.

When they were done, the Hawkers had a push-pin in each Iowa town on the map and - even more valuable - a story to go with every one.
