WHITNEY, TX (WTSP/WFAA/CNN) - Crews intentionally set fire to a luxury home that is hanging off a cliff 75 feet above a lake Friday.

Officials believed this would be the best way to deal with the home before it toppled into the water below. The homeowners were evacuated two weeks ago and the 4,000-square-foot house was condemned due to the ground giving way underneath.

They are now residing in their other property, a waterfront apartment along Miami Beach. They said they were devastated.

"You don't see how something that huge can get hurt or just disintegrate right in front of your face," Denise Webb said.

She and her husband, Robert Webb, said their home was worth nearly $1 million, and they had much of their retirement nest egg tied up in it. Their insurance policy likely does not cover earth movement.

"I want to leave that to my grandchildren," Robert Webb said. "It's a big hit."

The ground started to give way in April. But when they purchased the home in 2012, it checked out fine. The Webbs said geologists and inspectors told them it was perfectly stable.

Now, they are picking up the tab for its demolition.

"It's, it's really tough," Denise Webb said. "That house was special, and I don't even know why it was so special, but it was special to me."
