An 18-year-old woman who sources say had recently graduated from Kaiser High School was killed late Wednesday night after being involved in a moped accident in Hawaii Kai.
Police say the woman hopped a curb on Lunalilo Home Road at around 11 p.m. and collided with a metal utility pole. She is not believed to have been wearing a helmet.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and police say the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Speed does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, but police say they are still investigating the possibility that the woman was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
Her death was the 29th traffic fatality on Oahu of 2014, five fewer than on the same date last year.
