HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii's athletics director plans to cut about $4 million from wish lists of coaches and staff to get the sports operating budget around $30 million for the coming fiscal year.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser said Wednesday that Athletics Director Ben Jay says there are things the department won't be able to fund.
Jay says department and staff requests total about $34 million in its latest draft budget. He says it's a huge figure that needs to be cut.
Hawaii is ending its current fiscal year June 30 with a $2 million deficit, with total spending of more than $30 million. The athletics department has lost money 10 of the past 12 years.
Jay says he plans to review the budget during a travel day from a meeting in Florida.
