HONOLULU (AP) - Former University of Hawaii President M.R.C. Greenwood is retiring from her faculty post at the school.

Greenwood stepped down as president last year, saying she wanted to deal with health problems and spend more time with her family. She was expected to return to a tenured faculty position at the medical school after a year of unpaid leave.

But Greenwood says she has instead decided to pursue writing and policy interests and she prefers to stay on the mainland to do so.

The university said Tuesday Greenwood will retire at the end of the month.

Greenwood resigned as president after the athletic department was scammed out of $200,000 by someone falsely claiming to represent the singer Stevie Wonder.
