Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell honored a Handi-Van operator with a proclamation Monday for her act of heroism.

On May 25, Georgette Chun was on her daily route along Middle Street with two passengers on board when she smelled smoke coming from the van.

Chun pulled over to the side of the road where she safely escorted her passengers, one in a wheelchair, out and away from the van.

Within minutes, the van was consumed in fire.

"This is a real hero in action putting her life on the line to help those she's serving," Caldwell said.

Caldwell recognized Chun not only for her heroism but also for her humility, saying, "You set a good goal for all of us to remember the good work the Handi-Van does everyday and it is represented in you and in your actions."

Chun said any of her co-workers would have done the same.

To further recognize her actions, the mayor declared June 9th Georgette Mahealani Chun day.
