HOUSTON (RNN) – The smoke pouring from a Houston home recently was just a clever distraction for a firefighter hoping to propose to his girlfriend.
Firefighter Jesse Gonzalez, with the help of his unit, staged a fake blaze at the home of a fellow firefighter, knowing that his girlfriend, a police officer working in the area, would have to show up at the scene to assist.
When she arrived, it wasn't emergency sirens she heard, but the sound of Bruno Mars' Marry Me playing.
In his heavy fire suit, Gonzalez dropped to one knee. She said yes.
Gonzalez said both the fire and police departments signed off on the proposal beforehand and that everyone was on standby the entire time in case of an actual emergency.
He said while the fire was fake, everyone at the scene used the opportunity as a training exercise in addition to helping him propose.
