Reverend Walter Brownridge looks back at Maya Angelou's life

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The world is remembering renowned poet, author, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou after she passed away on May 28th after battling unspecified health issues.

The author of the celebrated autobiography, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" was 86 years old.

Angelou was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri, under the name Marguerite Annie Johnson and moved to Stamps, Arkansas at a young age where she struggled with racism.

She continued on to travel the world and spread hope with her poetry and inspirational speeches. Angelou was also an actress, a songwriter, and a historian. 

Reverend Walter Brownridge, the Dean of the Cathedral of St. Andrew, joined Steve on Sunrise this morning to share his thoughts surrounding the passing of Maya Angelou.
