HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Those who trained with him at a Hilo gym called him, 'The Danger Man,' because he had a temper.

28-year old Varaha Mims was trying to become an MMA cage fighter.

Just after midnight, a couple outside a bar on Keawe Street were attacked.  The 28-year-old Pahoa man has critical injuries, the 27-year-old Hilo woman was not seriously hurt.

Police say that crime was random.

But police say his next target was not.

"I hear a 'boom' upstairs, says neighbor Michael Hargrove, who then her a fight and someone pleading for their life, "No don't,  don't do this."

Hargrove tells Hawaii News Now, that Mims used to live in the house on Ohai Street in Wainaku and attacked his former landlord.

"He was evicted," he says, "He's disgruntled."

The 49-year old landlord is also in critical condition.

Mims was still at the home when police arrived.   He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder, three counts of second-degree attempted murder, third-degree criminal property damage, first-degree burglary and third-degree promoting a detrimental drug.
