Fire rips through vacant restaurant on S. Beretania St.

MAKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Fire Department is investigating the cause of a structure fire on South Beretania Street early Sunday morning.

Fire officials say it happened shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday on 2230 South Beretania Street. Authorities say the single story building was an old vacant restaurant.

Upon arrival, officials saw heavy smoke coming from the right side of the structure. Crews conducted an interior search of the building but found no one inside.

The Honolulu Police Department shut down South Beretania Street near the intersection of Isenberg Street around 8:30 a.m.

The fire was under control at 8:10 a.m. Roads were reopened around 9:13 a.m.

The cause and damage estimation is still under investigation. Officials say the interior of the structure is a total loss.
