$5K reward offered for Kauai cat killings

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - On the north shore of Kauai cats are being poisoned.  On the east and south sides, cats are being shot.

Altogether, more than 50 have been found dead or are missing on the Garden Isle since March.

"It's heartbreaking," says Basil Scott of the Kauai Community Cat Project, "We believe there are different people at each location."

Scott says there are five or six areas on the island where cats have been found dead by people who provide cat colony care.  Basically the volunteers feed the cats and trap them to be spayed or neutered then release them back to their colonies.

The killings have stunned cat lovers because they started happening about the same time but can't possibly be the work of the same people.

"We believe the shootings are two different individuals," says Scott.

Pellet guns are being used to shoot the feral felines.

Scott thinks a separate group is doing the poisoning.

The Humane Society is now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

"It's happening in very visible areas," says Penny Cistaro, Director of Kauai Humane Society, "Someone has seen something and we'd like people to contact us so we can get some guidance, direction on where to go."

KHS has already received a credible tip, "We've gotten a phone call that we're going to pursue," says Cistaro.

Basil Scott says the reward could also scare the people enough that the killings stop.
