HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Keegan Passos is one of the many children in Hawaii who have received life-saving care from Kapiolani Medical Center. He's had three open heart surgeries and now wears a pacemaker.

Keegan has been selected as Hawaii's "Champion" for the Children's Miracle Network's Champions Across America. The program honors remarkable children who have triumphed despite severe medical challenges.

Parents Jullie and Jay Passos turned to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children when they found out their son would be born with a heart defect. Keegan's heart condition was first diagnosed at 32 weeks while in utero. After birth, it was determined that Keegan had Tetralogy Of Fallot and Pulmonary Atresia, a rare condition that accounts for only about 2% of congenital heart disease.

Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children have been by Keegan's side through it all; with a total care team. Keegan, now 16 years old, fells lucky to be alive. He finds support through the Healing Hearts mentor group. Inspired by his first mentor, Ryan, Keegan decided to help other kids like him, by providing support and insight to others facing medical challenges.

The Children's Miracle Network hospitals provide the finest medical care, life-saving research and preventative education to help millions of kids overcome diseases and injuries of every kind. They depend on community support and donations to continue to excel and provide the best medical care to Hawaii's children.
