Firefighters have made significant progress in keeping a small fire from spreading as it burned in ponderosa pine in the Prescott National Forest.

Firefighters from several agencies were able to secure a perimeter around the Boundary Fire to keep it under 2 acres, said forest spokeswoman Debbie Maneely.

The U.S. Forest Service was using a water-dropping helicopter on the fire.

The wildfire started about 9:30 a.m. and the alert was issued about 10:30 a.m. through the CodeRED emergency alert system.

It was declared contained, and the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office lifted evacuations Tuesday afternoon.

The fire started Tuesday morning near Walker. That's an area about 10 miles southeast of Prescott and about six miles south of Lynx Lake. The area has both seasonal and full-time homes.

The Red Cross set up a temporary evacuation center in Prescott as a precaution, but it was closed after a few hours.
