KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police processing a stolen car in Kihei on Sunday night discovered explosive blasting caps inside the vehicle, and several nearby buildings have been evacuated until an investigation has been completed.
Maui Police Department officials say that at about 12 p.m. on Sunday, a rental car was stolen from beachgoers at Ahihi Bay in Makena. Around 10:45 p.m., the vehicle was discovered in an area near the Villas at Kenolio in Kihei.
While processing the stolen vehicle, police say blasting caps were found and bomb squad personnel were contacted for proper disposal.
A perimeter was set up and as a precaution, several nearby buildings were evacuated. The Red Cross was contacted to make arrangements for displaced residents.
Red Cross officials say they have opened a shelter in the area for approximately 15 affected residents.
