HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two fatal motor vehicle crashes occurred overnight in separate areas of Maui, according to Maui police.

Maui police say the first crash happened Sunday night at 9:26 p.m. on Baldwin Avenue in Paia.  Police say a man driving a black Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck lost control of his vehicle and collided into a tree. The driver, 30-year-old Kawika Kahakauwila, of Paia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they suspect speed may have been a factor in the crash.

The second fatal crash happened in Kihei around 3 a.m.

Police say 25-year-old Terrance Kyle Morgan of Kihei was driving a 2004 Nissan northbound on Piilani Highway, between Welakahao Road and Lipoa Street. Police say Morgan lost control, crossed left of center and ran off the western shoulder of the roadway before rolling over.

Morgan died at the scene.

A passenger in the car, a 21-year-old Kihei man, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said Morgan was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash; the 21-year-old passenger was wearing his seatbelt.

The involvement of speed and driving while using a mobile electronic device is suspected as a factor in this crash. Drugs and alcohol have not been determined as the investigation is still pending.
