Salt Lake building fire causes $70,000 in damages

SALT LAKE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Fire Department is investigating the cause of a building fire that caused $70,000 in damage to an apartment in Salt Lake late Friday night.

According to HFD, the fire started around 11:52 p.m. in a seven-story building on 909 Lilikoi Street.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the third floor.

Officials used forced entry to get into the smoking unite, and discovered the origin of the fire on the kitchen counter.

Initial searches of the apartment found a dog locked in its kennel in one of the bedrooms. Officials removed the dog and returned it to its owner, who was outside.

The fire was extinguished around 12:17 a.m.

The owner of the unit, who is also the resident manager, was not home at the time of the incident.

One person was transported to the hospital. The persons identification and health status has not yet been released.

according to HFD, the fire caused $60,000 in damage to the structure, and $10,000 in damage to its contents.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
