Basebows fall in series opener to LBSU

Matt Cooper delivered another fine outing but it came in a losing effort as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior baseball team lost 3-1 to Long Beach State on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

Cooper (4-5) worked into the ninth but was lifted after walking Colby Brenner to lead off the inning. It would be Cooper's only walk of the game. Scott Squier came in and faced five batters, one a bases loaded walk to break the 1-1 tie. Squier got a strikeout and forced a pop up on his next two batters but got lifted himself for Juliene Jones. Jones issued a bases-loaded walk of his own to put LBSU up 3-1.

Cooper allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts for the game.

Andrew Rohrbach (6-1) tossed a complete game for the Dirtbags (23-23, 10-6 BWC), allowing one run on five hits with nine strikeouts for the win.

Long Beach State opened the scoring with a run in the fourth inning. Richard Prigatano (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) delivered a two-out triple then was driven home on Michael Hill's double that snuck in between Marc Flores (1 H, 1 RBI) and the first base bag.

The 'Bows (19-26, 3-13 BWC) finally broke through with their first run and tied the game in the sixth inning. Stephen Ventimilia (1 H, 1 R), after laying down a perfect bunt along the third base line, made his way to third before Flores came to the plate with two outs. Flores delivered, ripping a base hit through the hole into right field to tie the game.

Ino Patron batted 2-4 to lead the Dirtbags.

Hawai'i and Long Beach State continue their series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
