Waimea woodworkers transform act of vandalism to works of art
WAIMEA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -
The Waimea community has turned an act of vandalism to trees into pieces of art. In March 2012, an unidentified person or persons stripped off the bark of two koa trees and five calliandra trees at the Waimea Anuenue Park.
Some local woodworkers got permission to turn the wood into bowls, poi pounders and other items which are now up for sale. Proceeds will go to the Waimea Outdoor Circle -- a non-profit organization that seeks to foster environmental preservation -- that planted the trees.
