WAILUA, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kauai firefighters and police officers recovered a body near the Wailua River on Friday believed to be a missing female kayaker.
The victim has not yet been identified, but the woman -- who was reported missing Thursday night -- was a visitor in her 50s. Police said an employee from a nearby kayak rental company went looking for the woman when she failed to return her rented kayak by the 5 p.m. deadline. He spotted a kayak and paddle up the river, but couldn't locate the woman, which led him to reach out to authorities.
On Friday, police, firefighters and state Department of Land and Natural Resources staff searched the area at approximately 11:30 a.m. They found a body floating in a stream, less than a mile past Uluwehi Falls, also known as Secret Falls.
Police are investigating the incident, but said foul play is not suspected in the cause of her death.
An autopsy will be conducted early next week.
