ETBU softball wins 19th straight game

The road to defending their American Southwest Conference tournament championship has begun as East Texas Baptist University shut out Concordia University-Texas (17-24), 4-0, in the opening game.  Winning their 19th straight game, ETBU ties the longest winning streak in program history set in 2000 and is 36-5 overall.

Completing the shutout was Shelby Parker as she only allowed three hits with four strikeouts recording ETBU's 21st shutout of the year and sixth straight shutout.  Parker has now pitched 42 consecutive shutout innings and is 18-4 on the year.

Mallory Westbrook led the team going 3-of-3 at the plate with two RBI.  Jayme Perez knocked out her sixth home run of the year and Alexis Padilla recorded ETBU's other RBI.

On the second pitch of the game from Concordia's Sydney Coffey, Perez took a hack at the ball and sent it into the left field scoreboard for the 1-0 lead.  ETBU then added their second run in the bottom of the second inning when Westbrook's hit just barely made it over the first baseman's head bringing in Kayla Garcia.

ETBU would not score again until the sixth inning when they brought in two runs.  Padilla pinch hit for a single up the middle making it 3-0 as Garcia came in and then Westbrook recorded her second RBI of the game.  Westbrook's single to center field went long enough for Lindsey Vasquez to score for the four-run lead.

ETBU recorded 11 hits in the game and only two strikeouts to Concordia-Texas' three hits.

ETBU will now play Mary Hardin-Baylor at 1:00 p.m. on Friday in Tyler, Texas.
