The 17-year old died in fiery crash along the Hana Highway. He was driving home late Wednesday after a night of pig hunting with a friend, when Pu-Akima apparently fell asleep at the wheel. His Toyota Rav-4 went over the cliff near the Lower Keanae Road and burst into flames.
The passenger, 18-year old Samuel Keohuhu, was able to jump out of the SUV as it was tumbling down and then climb to safety.
Pu-Akima was also a standout football player.
After a moment of silence, the rest of his team was able to rally and beat Seabury Hall in three straight sets. Both teams joined together to rally around Pu-Akima's family. His mother, wiped tears from her eyes throughout the game, his younger brother, wore his number 2 jersey.
Pu-Akima was one of only 15 in the school's senior class and the loss is devastating.
