There are several ways you can stay up to date on severe weather in the ArkLaTex with KSLA News 12 and the StormTracker 12 Weather team!More >>
There is a risk for severe storms to track into the ArkLaTex today. These storms could bring damaging winds, large hail, flooding and tornadoes. That means power outages are possible tonight and into Monday morning across the entire area.
Right now, a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for McCurtain County, OK until 5:45 p.m. The storm is moving NE about 35 mph.
The set-up for Sunday's storm system has everything you don't want to see in the spring severe weather season. We'll start with strong winds near the surface out of the south, bringing in warmth and humidity from the Gulf of Mexico. We were able to feel the increasing heat and moisture throughout the afternoon Saturday. Then, as we look higher up in the atmosphere, the winds shift direction and speed up.
An upper level low pressure system tracking from Utah towards Missouri through the weekend will create a lot of spin in the atmosphere and encourage and storms that form to rotate. Follow that up with a slow moving cold front, and we make things very unstable in the air above us and have all the conditions needed for severe weather.
Storms have initially been slow to develop this morning, but as the atmosphere warms up from the sunshine, storms will begin firing up shortly after Noon. The first area to see the severe storms will be East and Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma. Then they will shift into Southwest Arkansas and Northern Louisiana.
Make sure you are prepared. Download the KSLA StormTracker 12 Weather app for your mobile device. Charge your phone up by Sunday morning and be prepared to go without power at your home for a few hours. Check to make sure the batteries in your Midland Weather Radio are fresh and that the radio is programmed. Know where your emergency supply kit is and make sure it's fully stocked.
