"He was full of 'aloha'," says Dawn Pono, a family friend of Isaiah Pu-Akima, "Such a good human being."
Pu-Akima, played football for Hana High School and was a standout volleyball player. The team is playing their last game of the season Friday night, Senior Night, but they will be without one of the two seniors.
Pu-Akima was driving his Toyota Rav-4 late Wednesday night along the Hana Highway. He had just finished pig hunting and possibly fell asleep at the wheel. The SUV plunged off a cliff about a mile away from Lower Keanae Road.
His passenger, an 18-year old boy, was thrown from the SUV, he scaled the cliff and went for help. Pu-Akima died at the scene.
"The students are devastated, the players, his classmates," says Pono, "They are getting ready to graduate, and he's gone."
Pono says there are only 15 in the graduating class. She says the entire community is mourning.
