A 17-year-old was killed early Thursday morning after the car he was driving reportedly went off the road and fell down a cliff on Maui, according to Maui Fire Department officials.
An MFD spokesperson says that firefighters from Hana and rescue personnel from Kahului responded to the scene of the accident, approximately halfway between mile markers 15 and 16 along the highway, where it was discovered a vehicle had gone off a cliff nearby.
Fire department personnel made their way nearly 300 feet down the cliff to the vehicle, where they confirmed that the male driver was killed in the crash.
Another 17-year-old male, believed to have been seated in the passengers seat of the car, was reportedly ejected from the vehicle prior to it going down the cliff. The boy did not require any medical treatment.
An operation to recover the body was conducted at first light, and the victim's body was airlifted to a landing zone at the Keanae Ball Park.
