Hawaii schools compete to collect old phone books

HONOLULU (AP) - Schools on many Hawaii islands are competing to collect the largest number of outdated telephone directories.

Hawaiian Telcom yellow pages publisher The Berry Co. is sponsoring the annual contest. The company says the old phone books will be recycled and kept out of landfills.

Schools may win cash prizes for participating. The award amounts vary based on the school's location.

Schools on Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii islands are participating. A separate recycling drive gathered old Oahu phone books in January.

Maui High School Parent Community Networking Center Coordinator Stacy Woodson says the program raises awareness about the difference people can make in protecting the local environment.

The contest runs through the end of next month.
