Marine accused of prostitute murder claims self-defense

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Marine Capt. Jesse Schweig, a prosecutor in the court martial of Master Sgt. Nathanial Cosby, showed the jury surveillance video and still pictures of Cosby together with Ivanice "Ivy" Harris the night she was killed.

The images show the two outside Kelley O'Neil's Waikiki bar, then inside an elevator at the Aston Waikiki hotel.

"A man who murders a woman and hides her body is going to leave clues behind." Schweig told the eight-person panel made up of officers and enlisted personnel. He said Cosby killed the 29-year-old Harris last May and then dumped her body.

But defense attorney Lt. Col. Clay Plummer said Cosby, 39. was the one being attacked.

"This case is going to come down to self-defense," he said.

Harris was a prostitute and Portland native. Plummer said she attacked Cosby with a lipstick knife after he refused to pay her and ordered her to get out of his hotel room.

"There was a struggle," Plummer said.

The prosecutor showed surveillance footage Honolulu police got of Cosby loading a large duffel bag into his rented SUV a couple of hours after he and Harris arrived at the hotel.

"They never saw Ivanice Harris leave that hotel alive," Schweig said.

But the defense said Harris cut Cosby's arm with the tiny knife, then stabbed him in the face. Plummer said Cosby was blinded by his own blood and fighting to get the knife away from Harris when her body suddenly went limp.

"He saw her eyes open. He knew she was gone," Plummer said.

Cosby told his attorneys he was confused and afraid. Harris's body was found near Yokohama Bay.

If convicted of murder, Cosby could be sentenced to life in prison without parole.
