Big Island structure fire causes $16,000 in damage

KEAAU, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Hawaii County Fire Department is investigating the cause of a structure fire in the Keaau area Friday. 

According to HFD, the residents had just arrived home when they heard a couple of "explosions" and saw smoke coming from the structure. 

Crews arrived at the cabin style house on Hopue Road around 5:30 p.m.

The structure was engulfed in flames, walls completely burned away with its roof almost on the ground. 
The fire was under control at 5:45 p.m., and extinguished at 5:50 p.m. 

Officials say the fire posed no threat to nearby exposures. 

No one was in the structure at the time of the fire. 

According to HFD officials, the structure is a "total loss of property." The damage is estimated at $16,000. The American Red Cross was also brought in for support. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
