UPDATE at 5:32 a.m. on FRIDAY: Power has reportedly been restored to all customers in the Whitmore Village area.
ORIGINAL STORY: Nearly 1,000 customers in the Whitemore Village area were reported to be without power on Friday morning as the result of an apparent electrical short, according to the Hawaiian Electric Company.
Officials say around 1,300 customers were initially in the dark before crews were able to restore service to some.
Hawaii Electric Company crews say a piece of insulating material broke and caused a short that could take up to three hours to fix.
