Rail officials today unveiled their new state-of-the-art guideway casting yard in Kalaeloa.

Contractor Kiewit will build thousands of 50-ton concrete guideway segments that will be installed along the 20-mile rail route.

"We have 83 people at this project, high paying local jobs. We have over 1,000 jobs on the project now," said Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell.

"When we go gangbusters on both ends we're going to have 4,000 people working on this project."

Dan Grabauskas, CEO of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit, said construction crews have built about 130 of these concrete guideways.

About 5,200 of these guideway segments will be used on the transit systems first 10-mile leg.

"As of today' were on schedule for both the construction of the columns in the field as well as the segments here," he said.

Rail officials plan to install the first of these guideway segments next month.
