Local Connection: Aloha Tower Marketplace

By: Rick Blangiardi

Aloha Tower Marketplace's best days are behind it so it's time for a new approach and Hawaii Pacific University has a bold plan in place.

Our Howard Dicus reported last week on the new construction underway to place dorms on the second floor and a mix of restaurants and stores on the first.

If everything goes as planned, all can be done in just a little more than a year from now.

Hooters and Gordon Biersch will remain but everything else will be up for grabs.

The sad fact remains that aloha tower has been down in the dumps for years with key tenants moving out one at a time from prime waterfront property.

Local residents long ago gave up on the Aloha Tower Marketplace as a viable destination for food, entertainment and shopping.

And it has been years since that area has been vibrant with tourists.

If HPU can successfully blend in some 300 students in dorms as well as faculty and staff, it could be a renaissance for the Aloha Tower Marketplace.

And it could be just what downtown needs.
