COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Quarterback Dylan Thompson and the Black team scored fast and early and dispatched the Garnet team in the annual Spring Game by a score of 28-10.

The sneak peak game gave South Carolina fans a taste of what they'll be cheering for come the fall when the team starts anew without departing QB Connor Shaw and DE Jadeveon Clowney.

Thompson made his first start as the full-time starter with a 4-minute 70-yard drive capped off by a 3-yard rushing touchdown by RB Brandon Wilds.

The new QB would finish the day 8-for-11 for 129 yards and one touchdown.

However, who received Thompson's only throwing touchdown ended up being one of the biggest storylines of the game.

Women's head basketball coach Dawn Staley came off the sideline and caught Thompson's 30-yard bomb, much to the delight of the 36,000+ fans in attendance.

"That was the most nervous I've ever been throwing a pass," said Thompson to laughter. "I was happy she caught it because I would have gotten a lot of junk if she wouldn't have."

Head football coach Steve Spurrier said he'd spoke to Staley on Wednesday about making the off-the-bench catch, which has become a staple of the annual game.

"That was probably the highlight play," said Spurrier.

Spurrier may not have seen too many highlight plays, but he may have seen several highlight players.

Freshman QB Connor Mitch made his first start at center for the Garnet team and took the team the length of the field thanks in part to a 37-yard dump off pass to Shon Carson.

Mitch completed the day with 7-for-10 and 108 yards. Mitch is currently in competition for the backup QB position with redshirt sophomore walk-on Perry Orth, who also played and went 6-for-10 for 86 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

"I'm not going to make that decision on being the backup, but I made some good reads," said Mitch. "I came off of some too quickly but overall, it was a good day."

The running back position also shined with redshirt freshman David Williams gaining meaningful experience with 35 yards and two touchdowns.

Williams has been nursing a hamstring injury all spring and appreciated the game-like feel the Spring Game provided.

"We've just been practicing, so I haven't gotten that experience of what the game feels like," said Williams.

Despite the mountain of a depth chart with Mike Davis, Shon Carson, and Brandon Wilds in front of him, Williams says he feels good about his chances for more field time.

"I feel like if I keep coming out and doing what I've been doing all spring, hopefully I can touch the field," said Williams.

Injury-wise, Shon Carson left the game with a shoulder injury. Spurrier said he believes his RB cracked his shoulder while landing on the field during a play.
