No tsunami threat to Hawaii after 7.3 quake near Papua New Guinea

A strong earthquake shook an area near the Papua New Guinea but was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The quake was measured at a magnitude 7.3, according to preliminary reports from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake happened shortly after 9:07 p.m. HST.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports, "Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. Repeat. A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii."
