For the second time this season the LSU Shreveport Pilots defeated NCAA Division I Alcorn State Braves, this time by a final score of 7-3 on Tuesday evening at Pilots Field in non-conference action. The Pilots picked up a road win over the Braves 4-3 earlier this season.
The Pilots (33-10), who remained in the NAIA's top 10 at no. 8 in today's release of the top 25 poll, got on the scoreboard first pushing across three runs in the bottom of the third inning on three hits. David Dorton, Blair Landry, and Parker Hebert all had singles in the inning while Jared Vial led off the inning with a walk and scored on Hebert's single to right.
William Breland's sac-fly brought home Dorton and Landry scored on a sac-fly from Connor McMullin. The Pilots added another run in the 3rd inning and it looked like they may run away with the contest as Dorton started the rally with a single and scored on another single from Hebert. But then the Pilots left the bases loaded giving the Braves some hope.
Alcorn State (5-28) answered with three runs in the 4th but two were unearned as the Pilots made two throwing errors on one play.
The bullpen showed up big for the Pilots not allowing another run in the game but things were interesting in the 9th as the Braves had the tying run on deck when the final out was made as they left runners stranded at 2nd and 3rd.
JayDon Day (2-0) picked up the win for the Pilots working two scoreless innings with one walk, the only batter to reach but he faced the minimum when he picked off the hitter he walked to end the 6th inning-his first inning of relief. Day worked a perfect 7th on just 9 pitches.
Caleb Olson got the start on the mound for the Pilots and the coaches were pleased to see his 1-2-3 performance retiring the three batters that he faced as he proved that he can provide some quality innings for the Pilots down the stretch on his first outing of the season.
David Diaz was the first one out of the pen for the Pilots and worked a quick and perfect first inning of relief but he struggled to find the strike zone walking a total of four in his final inning of work. Brandon Texiera and Jacob Rodrigue combined for a perfect 8th inning as Texiera retired the first two batters and then Rodrigue fanned the only batter he faced.
Lavallee, Dorton and Hebert were the only Pilots with multi-hits, all had two hits in the game.
The Pilots will host Huston-Tillotson on Friday (4:00) and Saturday (1:00) with double headers on both days in their final home regular season conference series.
