[Update 2:12 p.m.]

HPD: Farrington Hwy is now open between Pupupuhi St and Waipahu depot Rd.

[Update 1:35 p.m.]

Hawaii Gas received approval from DOT to return tomorrow morning (Wednesday) to complete repair of the leak. So far, Hawaii Gas has dug up and clamped the gas line on either side of the leak to stop the flow of gas. At this time, Hawaii Gas will be placing steel plates and opening all West bound lanes. Crews will return tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. and work until the leak is fully repaired.

Original story below posted:

Crews with the Honolulu Police and Fire departments, along with Hawaii Gas officials, are investigating a gas leak beneath a bridge along Farrington Highway in Waipahu that has caused nearby road closures.

HPD has shut down Farrington Highway in both directions between Waipahu Depot Road and Pupupuhi Street, officials say.

The leak was discovered after fire crews responded to signs of smoke from under the bridge, which runs over Waikele Street, according to reports.

No evacuations have been ordered at any surrounding properties, police say.

Fire crews say Hawaii Gas is assessing the situation.
