HONOLULU (AP) - Kauai County is expected to pay $290,000 to settle a councilman's lawsuit claiming his civil rights were violated for going against political foes.
Councilman Timothy Bynum sued the county in 2012, saying he was unfairly charged with zoning violations at his home because he was a critic of former Prosecuting Attorney Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho. His lawsuit claims they had disagreements over the county's zoning laws since 2008.
The settlement is expected to be put on the record during a hearing in federal court in Honolulu on Friday.
According to court documents filed by Bynum's attorneys, both sides agreed to settle the suit in February. The documents say the county must pay Bynum $290,000 by April 15.
Spokeswoman Sarah Blane says the county generally doesn't comment on pending legal matters.
