Kahaluu Elementary evacuated due to chemical odor; Dozens taken to hospital

KAHALUU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Kahaluu Elementary in Windward Oahu ended the school day around noon today due to a chemical odor reported near the campus.

School officials notified the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) of a suspicious odor in the area around 11:15 a.m. HFD is working with the City Department of Environmental Services and the State Department of Health to identify the source of the odor.

About 31 students and staff reported feeling symptoms of nausea, according to Emergency Medical Services personnel who were on-site with HFD. Twenty-five students and two adults who reported feeling ill were transported to Castle Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente.

As a precautionary measure, school administrators notified parents shortly after noon to pick up their children at Kaneohe District Park. The school day had been scheduled to end at 2:10 p.m. Kahaluu Elementary enrolls about 290 students.

Classes will resume as scheduled tomorrow, Friday, April 4.
